In 1961 my parents, Fred and Tina Poe founded a boutique travel service in Little Rock, Arkansas appropriately named Poe Travel. It was at the dawn of the Jet Age when “boutique” wasn’t even a catchy marketing term. But that’s what it was and is. They quickly grew the agency’s reputation for providing innovative and imaginative travel planning services to discerning clients all around the world. Under the tutelage of my sister, Ellison Poe, it remains one of the very best retail travel agencies out there.
Fortunately for me, I was born into this family of wanderers. From a very early age, I was groomed to explore. I also believe they may have unwittingly taught me to be a Connector.
I’m proud to have apprenticed at Poe Travel during my early years in travel and tourism. Subsequently, I’ve worn many hats working with the creme-de-la cremes purveyors of luxury travel. Gradually I homed in on what my father would refer to as ne plus ultra travel. He would explain it as a narrow sliver of a spectrum where it is especially good to know the right people.
I like to go places. I like to visit new places that are different and to see familiar places differently. The general idea of this living collection of anecdotes and vignettes is to share insights about places, people, and things that are unusual. There is a pitiful dearth of worthwhile reading in today’s consumer travel media. I intend to make this a repository of writing and resources that are actually interesting.
My opinions are those of an informed, experienced travel professional. I’ve had some incredible adventures and they keep on coming. Unlike many travel writers and marketers, I don’t sugar-coat my observations. I relish in the real world. Having said that, I encourage you to join me in conversation or even on some of the set departures I host – those being prepared and executed at the pinnacle of service, comfort, privacy, and safety.
